CLASSROOM HANDBOOK
EXPECTATIONS
In order to keep classroom life as simple, safe and focused as possible, we will have five major behavior rules. These were designed to reflect basic aspects of courtesy and to address elements of good work habits. They will remain posted all year long.
These rules will be in effect at all times:
1. Be polite and treat everyone with RESPECT.
2. Be responsible and make good decisions.
3. Pay attention and follow instructions the first time they are given.
4. Finish class-work on time.
5. Return homework on time.
CONSEQUENCES
In order to help the students remember the rules, they are issued three sticks, called “consequence sticks”. If a student chooses to break a rule, we will ask for a stick to be pulled. They place their stick in the rule cups and we will then record this on their “Weekly Report”. The consequences to pulling sticks are:
1st time – GREEN stick: Warning
2nd time – YELLOW stick: Loss of privileges (15 minutes of recess)
3rd time – RED stick: Loss of recess time (30 minutes) and student writes a note home to parents explaining their actions and how they plan to improve their behavior.
****Severe misbehavior, such as fighting, verbal abuse, blatant defiance of the teacher, dangerous objects brought into the classroom, etc., will be immediately referred to the principal.
Every day the students begin again with all three sticks ---A FRESH START!!
COMMUNICATION
HOMEWORK FOLDERS/ AGENDAS
Each student has a homework folder that they will be bringing home every day. The folders will have their daily homework assignments and any letters and/or papers from the school or from us. Please ask your child daily if they have any papers for you.
Each student will have an agenda provided by the school. They are responsible to bring their agenda every day and record their assignments and upcoming events. This will help keep you child organized and help them establish good organizational skills and study habits. Please check your child’s agenda every night.
****If the agenda is lost, your child will be responsible to buy a new one from the office.
WEEKLY REPORTS
Every Friday your child will be bringing home their “Weekly Report” in their homework folder. Their Weekly Report will reflect your child’s weekly behavior (sticks pulled) and academic responsibility (classwork and homework turned in). Your child’s goal is to have a blank report. This shows us that your child turned in all of their work in a timely manner and followed the classroom rules. If your child does not turn in an assignment or has to pull a stick for not following a rule, we will record it on their Weekly Report.
Weekly Reports are our way of letting you and your child know how the week has gone. By sending these reports home on Friday, we are hoping that if there was a problem with something throughout the week you and your child can discuss ways to improve the behavior over the weekend. We also hope that if your child brings home a perfect report, the weekend allows time for a special reward for superior behavior and responsibility.
Your child’s homework over the weekend is to show you their Weekly Report and to have you sign it and return it to us on MONDAY morning. **This is a homework grade!
**If your child brings home a perfect Weekly Report on Friday, we have rewarded them with a treat in class and they are acknowledged as being a “STAR STUDENT” for the week! In addition, we have a classroom Star Student chart and they are given a sticker to graph their success.
Let’s work together and make sure that your child is a STAR STUDENT every week!
We can accomplish this by:
· Checking homework folders & agendas every night – make sure homework is completed!
· Help your child make time to do homework, where they can concentrate and not be disturbed.
· Let your child know that YOU know our expectations and that you know all of our rules!
· Call us or stop by the classroom (before or after school) if you ever have any questions or concerns.
· Explain to your child the importance of a good education and encourage them to do their very best!
Together we can make a difference in your child’s education!
HOMEWORK
Every week your child will have homework. The homework will consist of spelling, reading and mathematics. These assignments are a critical component of our third grade class. They will help solidify classroom concepts and enrich your child’s learning. The homework assignments are listed below:

These assignments will be recorded daily in the agenda.
ON OCCASION YOUR CHILD MAY BRING HOME A SOCIAL STUDIES OR SCIENCE ASSIGNMENT FOR HOMEWORK.
WE ALL HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE!
STUDENT’S ASSIGNMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Students are expected to be responsible for their own actions! They are expected to do their best job on every assignment. Work is expected to be done neatly. We expect to see the student’s best handwriting being used for every assignment that is turned in. We also expect that the student neatly writes their FIRST and LAST name and date on every assignment. Students are to do the work on their own and ask for help only after they have given their best effort. All assignments are to be turned in ON TIME.
TEACHER’S ASSIGNMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
It is our responsibility to assign work that will benefit each student and encourage success. We will make sure that assignments are checked and we will assign grades when it is appropriate. It is our responsibility to be consistent and fair in our grading. Because we value positive support and we believe it motivates children to develop good study habits, we will make sure to give some form of feedback to each child on assignments. We also will give praise and other incentives for working hard every week!
PARENT’S ASSIGNMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Parents are the key to making homework assignments a positive experience for their children. Therefore, we ask that parents make homework assignments a top priority! Provide your child with necessary supplies, a quiet homework environment and set a daily homework time. This time may need to be flexible due to outside activities, but it should be early enough that the child is not already too tired to concentrate. It is important that parents provide praise and support. Do not allow children to avoid their work, and please contact us if problems arise.
